What is a fouta?
The fouta is a traditional piece of fabric originating from the Mediterranean basin, popularized by Tunisian hammams where it served as both a towel and a sarong. Woven from cotton, it is distinguished by its lightness, quick drying, and characteristic fringed finishes.
Unlike a classic terrycloth bath towel, the traditional fouta is flat-woven — which makes it much thinner, faster to dry, and ideal to take anywhere without bulk.
The different types of foutas
Not all foutas are alike. Here are the main variations you'll find in our collection:
- The flat fouta: the most traditional version, finely woven, perfect as a sarong or for light beach use.
- The honeycomb fouta: recognizable by its textured, raised weave, it offers a little more thickness while maintaining good absorbency.
- The terry-lined fouta: one side flat weave, one side terry, the best of both worlds, between the style of the fouta and the comfort of a real bath towel.
The choice depends mainly on the use: more for a sarong and light decoration (flat fouta), or more for replacing a classic bath towel (terry-lined fouta).

How to properly care for your fouta
To preserve the softness and colors of your fouta over time, a few simple rules are sufficient:
- Washing: machine wash at 30°C, with similar colors to avoid bleeding.
- Drying: air dry preferably; the fouta dries naturally very quickly thanks to its fine weave.
- Ironing: optional, a slight crumple is part of the fabric's natural charm.
- First washes: as with most artisan-woven cottons, slight pilling or minimal shrinkage may occur during the very first wash; this is normal and does not affect the quality of the fabric thereafter.
